The presentation of the Award, and a cheque for £5000, was made on 8 February 2008.
Janet Holloway, AQA's Assistant Director for Subject Administration, presents Professor Roger Bennett, the Principal of North Lindsey College, with their prize.
College/schools links started at North Lindsey around 1994, but took on momentum with the opening of the Skills Centre in 2004. On the initiative of the Principal, support and funding was successfully won from stakeholders, the LSC, the LEA and employers to convert an existing building to dedicated 14+ provision. The purpose of the project is to ensure all KS4 learners in North Lincolnshire have the opportunity to access a diverse, flexible and personalised vocational curriculum.
Since 2004, the Skills Centre has delivered opportunities to over 700 young people per year from 14 secondary schools in North Lincolnshire, offering over 30 subjects from entry level to level 2. This includes GCSE provision, BTEC, NVQ and certificated programmes from Awarding Bodies such as NCFE and CACHE . Only programmes with accredited outcomes are offered. The provision is learner centred.
The College/School Partnerships Beacon Award is presented annually and is open to all further education, sixth form and tertiary colleges in the UK who have established successful and sustainable partnerships with schools.
The Beacon Award Programme is co-ordinated and run by the Association of Colleges.
