Extended Project – new qualification, new approach

The new level 3 Extended Project gives students more control over their study than ever before. They have a free choice of project topic, so they can choose to explore a further aspect of a subject they're studying, or another subject, or choose a topic that they have a personal interest in.

And the finished project can be almost anything too – a written report, a performance, a piece of art, a community project, a CD or DVD, or computer software - the options are endless.

This level of choice and flexibility means students are engaged and motivated, and gain valuable research and project management skills along the way.

What is the Extended Project?

The Extended Project is a level 3 qualification to be introduced from September 2008. It will be available to all level 3 learners, from GCE to modern apprenticeships, and is a compulsory part of the new specialised diplomas.

Students have to:

  • Choose a topic to study,
  • Complete a production log to document the project process,
  • Plan, research and carry out their project, and
  • Prepare a presentation on the outcome.

How is it assessed?

The assessment covers both the process and the end product. The final project, plus the production log, will be assessed as a whole, according to a generic set of marking criteria. We'll be looking at how well students identify and use resources, carry out research, develop their ideas to realise an outcome and then reflect on the outcome and the process.

AQA pilot Extended Project?

AQA is currently piloting this exciting new qualification and we're looking for centres to join in now. Assessment on this pilot is available in November 2007 and May 2008, before the introduction of the real thing in September 2008. Students joining the pilot will have an advantage over their peers when applying for higher education or in interviews, and centres on the pilot will benefit from the support and training we can provide, giving you valuable experience earlier than other centres. And it's fully funded, with UCAS points for your students.

The Extended Project offers students a unique opportunity to develop essential skills for higher education and the workplace, in a subject area of their own choice. We're pleased to be leading the way on this exciting new qualification. We'd like you to join us.
