Examiner and moderator training

New examiners and moderators, receive full training and support in their new roles.

For example, as a new examiner you

  • receive distance-learning materials, which show you how to apply the mark scheme when marking candidates' scripts, and a self-assessment exercise to test your understanding
  • may be invited to a training day where the Principal Examiner outlines principles and criteria for marking in detail
  • join in training to standardise your marking with that of the Principal Examiner. The training includes an explanation of the question paper and mark scheme, followed by marking exercises and feedback to help you mark correctly and consistently
  • are assigned a Team Leader who mentors you throughout the marking process
  • if involved in online standardisation, the electronic capture of marks or online marking of candidates' scripts, you are trained in how to use the applications, via the web or in face-to-face sessions.

We have comprehensive Examiner and Moderator Handbooks and User Guides. There is a telephone Contact Centre and we have electronic messaging services to ensure that we provide full support.

Senior examiners are also thoroughly trained as they progress in their examining careers with us, and there are regular conferences for Chairs of Examiners.

If you are interested in becoming an examiner or moderator with AQA, please visit our vacancies page for more information.

We look forward to welcoming you to one of our examining and moderating teams and to working with you in the future.
