How the Bacc works

The AQA Baccalaureate (AQA Bacc) is founded on A-levels with three additional elements providing broader academic and life-skills education.

The elements of the AQA Bacc

Please select an element in the table below to discover what they mean to you and your students.

AQA Bacc
Depth of study
Any three A-level subjects (excluding the subject used for broader study) to provide in-depth academic study and to test knowledge, understanding and application.
Broader study
One AS level (or A-level) that differs from a student's main programme of study, or Level 3 Core Maths, to develop extended knowledge and skills.
Extended project
Development of independent learning, self-managing and research ability through completion of an extended project.
Enrichment activities
Formal recognition of non-academic pursuits that develop valuable skills, and qualities, such as initiative, teamwork and leadership.

How is it awarded?

Students meet the criteria by achieving:

  • at least grade E in each of their A-levels
  • at least grade E in the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
  • a pass (E or above) in a differing AS level (or A-level) subject, or Level 3 Core Maths
  • a minimum of 100 hours of enrichment activities.

The AQA Bacc is awarded with a Pass, Merit or Distinction; the level is determined by the student's A-level and EPQ grades.
