GCE Classical Civilisation (2020)

A2 outline

At A2, candidates study two further significant aspects of the classical world. Areas of study include archaeology and philosophy. An understanding of the links between different central elements of study is expected, and all topics encourage candidates to a greater understanding of the cultural, religious, social and political values of the classical world.

The A2 specification has 2 units:

Unit 3: A study of an aspect of Classical Civilisation 1

Optional topic list

  • Mycenaean Civilisation
  • The Persian Wars
  • Greek Tragedy
  • Augustus and the Foundation of the Principate

Assessment

Written Paper:1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting:25% of total A Level marks

Candidates answer one structured, source-based question (from a choice of two) and one essay (from a choice of two) on their chosen topic.

The source-based question will be worth 35 marks.
The essay will be worth 40 marks.

Unit 4: A study of an aspect of Classical Civilisation 2

  • Socrates and Athens
  • Alexander
  • Roman Epic
  • Tiberius and Claudius

Assessment

Written Paper:1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting:25% of total A Level marks

Candidates answer one structured, source-based question (from a choice of two) and one essay (from a choice of two) on their chosen topic.

The source-based question will be worth 35 marks.
The essay will be worth 40 marks.
