New GCE Classical Civilisation – launch video

Transcript

AQA GCE Classical Civilisation has been something of a success story since its last revision for the 2001/2002 examinations. It proved an immediate hit with students as an AS course, both to provide breadth to a post-16 course of study including other disciplines, and also for those pursuing Classics or History specialisms for A-level awards. Since those early days, numbers of students taking up the course have grown. Feedback from teachers has generally been favourable, but has also signalled to us some areas for consideration.

Classical Civilisation focuses on the Greek and Roman worlds and opens a window on these influential civilisations which have underpinned the world we all live in today. It takes in archaeology, architecture, art, history and politics, literature and philosophy. What better way to raise understanding amongst students working in these disciplines than to look into the past, to the early development of these areas of learning?

We have enabled you to select a variety of routes through these areas to offer interest and flexibility to your teaching and to enable your students to work to their strengths. Students may either focus primarily on one particular area - literature, Greek history, Roman history, visual arts - or study a broader introduction to the achievements of the classical world by selecting from a variety of fields. We have carefully considered the topic areas that have shown the greatest appeal in recent times and have been mindful of the wishes of teachers of some minority areas as well. Not only are all topics accessible to 17-19 year olds but they are also assimilable by teachers from a range of teaching backgrounds.

So, for the Ancient Historians out there who have concerns that their qualification is disappearing, you can stop worrying! AQA Classical Civilisation can deliver a history course focusing on Greek and/or Roman history, just as you wish, bringing in elements of literature and society to meet the subject criteria. There is also plenty on offer for those who prefer a literary route supported by appropriate social and historical background.
