AQA GCE English Language and Literature A – a new A Level specification
Our new English Language and Literature A specification provides a challenging yet accessible course which successfully bridges the gap between GCSE and Higher Education. It allows for exciting, vibrant teaching and offers a wider choice of texts than before, a mix of classic and contemporary, prose and drama.
The study of speech is at the heart of the specification students can choose to specialise in the study of one genre at AS if they wish.
What's the new specification like?
AS will develop students' skills of integrated literary and linguistic analysis and writing fluently and coherently. They look at stylistic and linguistic issues, writing with varying styles or voices in response to themes.
Introducing Analysis and Production
Unit 1 looks at language production and students will study two texts from a range, looking at issues such as theme, attitude, language and idiom.
Analysing Speech and its Representation
In Unit 2 students will look at speech in a literary or non-literary context, and they'll study a further text, focussing on speech, style and linguistic issues.
At A2 the specification candidates further develop the skills acquired at AS.
Exploring Comparison and Production
In Unit 3 students will use a variety of approaches to analyse and compare unseen texts, and they'll develop production skills through non-fiction writing.Developing Comparison
Unit 4 is coursework and students will choose a comparative question to explore in depth the relationship between two texts chosen from a prescribed list.
What will the exams look like?
Much of the assessment style will be familiar. Our questions are always designed to enable students to best demonstrate their knowledge and we ensure they have time to show what they've learned without rushing. Pick up a leaflet or look on our website for more detailed information.
