AQA's English Literature A is the market leader. Our new specification continues to offer students opportunities to engage with texts through time, across cultures, genres and gender, encouraging them to develop the skills of wide and close reading, and to develop as informed, independent readers and critics.
What does the specification look like?
At AS the new specification offers a coherent course of study with plenty of choice for teachers and students. There are three optional areas of study.
All the work at AS, for the coursework or exam, will be in one of these areas of study. In Unit 1, students combine the study of a set poetry text with wider reading and we've provided an extensive reading list to help students make appropriate choices for this wider reading.
A2 further develops opportunities for independent learning and research, and for making informed choices. Teachers and students will devise a course of reading starting with Chaucer and ending in the present day, choosing texts from all three genres that reflect the theme of Love.
For the coursework, students study a Shakespeare play of their own choice, and write an extended essay on 2 other texts of their choice.
What will the exams look like?
The exam papers give students a choice of questions and will follow a tried and tested format. We also think it's important to give students enough time to do the exams, so they can show what they've learnt without rushing and making mistakes.
And you'll have the flexibility to enter students for a unit in January too. All units will be available in January and June.
AQA – enabling you to make an informed choice
The new Literature A specification offers continuity from the hugely popular current specification and gives students and teachers maximum opportunity to make their own choices within a supportive framework. We believe it's the right choice for you and your students.
