English Literature has had a makeover. And as a result:
AQA English Literature B has always been a dynamic and forward looking specification. The new specification offers an exciting set of units, mixing some of the best of the old specification with some new and interesting ways of reading texts.
What's the new specification like?
At AS students will develop a broad understanding of some of the ways in which literature is written and read.
Aspects of Narrative
In Unit 1 they'll explore the ways in which authors tell stories, and readers read them, focusing on contemporary novels and narrative poems. With four texts to study, the emphasis will be on skills and connections rather than line by line going through each text.
In the coursework unit, they'll study two plays under the banner of tragedy, and teachers will be able to take creative approaches to teaching and assessing the texts.
In A2 students will examine further ways of thinking about texts.
Aspects of Gothic or Aspects of the Pastoral
Unit 3 offers a choice of topics, both of which will strike a chord with students.
In the coursework unit, students will produce a comparative essay with free choice of texts. They'll also study a pre-released booklet outlining some key aspects of literary studies and then apply some of these ideas to a text of their choice.
More texts to read could mean more texts to buy, but we've taken some creative steps to help with the financial burden. For units 1 and 3 we are going to create one single volume covering several of the poetry options and pre-release material for unit 4 will be issued free of charge. Our set text selections mix exciting new choices with some more familiar favourites and there is free choice of texts in the coursework units.
In both our coursework units there'll be a specified coursework adviser to offer help and guidance throughout the year.
You'll still have the flexibility to enter students for a unit in January if you wish, as all units will be available in January and June.
