New GCE Geography – launch video

Transcript

AQA Geography is going places! As the UK's most popular exam board, we've taken advantage of the changes to A-levels to produce a single, stimulating and challenging new geography specification, building on GCSE and ensuring progression to Higher Education and employment.

What's the new specification like?

The new specification balances traditional geography with contemporary and engaging geographical subject content. Key themes are management of change and sustainability. It encourages students to reflect on why they think the way they do about an issue, as well as how others think, skills that are vital for citizens in the 21st century.

The specification allows students to extend and exercise their geographical skills, and there's choice. Fieldwork is at the core of this, both at AS and A2, but there are also opportunities to develop further skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

At AS we believe students need a broad understanding of key aspects of both physical and human geography. And from these, students can choose from three options.

To show that the key aspects of physical geography are Rivers, floods and their management and for human geography Global population change.

At A2, the concepts, themes and skills from AS are extended and developed in different settings, taking in contemporary issues, challenges and conflicts. Unit 3 offers a wide range of topics and content and there's also choice in Unit 4. Candidates can choose to be active researchers, managing and reflecting on their own learning activities or, they can be active evaluators of information, using geographical knowledge and understanding and their skills of analysis to form measured views on complex issues at a variety of scales.

Either way they can demonstrate their skills in geographical research and enquiry in an exciting and stimulating manner.

You will still have the flexibility to enter students for either AS unit in January as well as in June, starting with AS in January 2009.

AQA – enabling you to make informed decisions

With updated and topical content, and the most popular and successful features of the current specifications, we believe our new Geography specification will provide a fresh modern course that will appeal to both students and their teachers.
