AS outline

At AS, candidates will develop a knowledge and understanding of the legal system and an ability to evaluate its operation and performance. The specification introduces substantive law and requires simple application of aspects of criminal law and civil law (either tort or contract).

The AS specification has 2 units:

Unit 1: Law Making and the Legal System

Topic list

Section A: Law Making

  • Parliamentary law making
  • Delegated legislation
  • Statutory interpretation
  • Judicial precedent

Section B: The Legal System

  • The civil courts and other forms of dispute resolution
  • The criminal courts and lay people
  • The legal profession and other sources of advice and funding
  • The judiciary

Assessment

Written Paper:1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting:50% of total AS/25% of total A Level marks

Candidates must answer three questions from eight, one from Section A, Law Making, one from Section B, The Legal System, and one from either Section. Total marks available = 95 (including 5 marks for QWC)


Unit 2: The Concept of Liability

Topic list

Section A: Introduction to Criminal Liability

  • Underlying principles of criminal liability
  • The courts: procedure and sentencing

Section B: Introduction to Tort

  • Liability in negligence
  • The courts: procedure and damages

OR

Section C: Introduction to Contract

  • Formation of contract
  • Breach of contract
  • The courts: procedure and damages

Assessment

Written Paper:1 hour 30 minutes
Weighting:50% of total AS/25% of total A Level marks

Candidates must answer the compulsory question on Criminal Law and either one question on Tort or one question on Contract.
Total marks available = 95 (including 5 marks for QWC)
