As the UK's largest exam board, AQA has listened to teachers' views about what you want from a new PE specification. We've developed a PE specification that maintains the academic rigour of the subject and leads the way in sport and PE, addressing contemporary issues that are interesting and engaging for teachers and students.
What's the new specification like?
The specification is straightforward for teachers to deliver and allows students to focus on a single activity throughout the course. Content has been updated so it's relevant to sport and PE in the 21st century.
At AS, students will look at the opportunities for and the effects of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. In the practical unit, they'll get experience of sporting roles, such as performer, official or coach, in their chosen activity, and use theory and knowledge to identify strengths and weaknesses in their own and others' performance.
At A2, students will examine ways of optimising performance, looking at applied exercise physiology, psychology and biomechanics. They'll also focus on topical issues such as the impact of sponsorship, business, media, law and technology on sport today. In the practical unit, students will be assessed on three areas:
What will the assessment be like?
The assessment style will be familiar. Units 2 and 4 will be internally-assessed coursework, with moderation by AQA. Units 1 and 3 will be written papers and we have ensured that students have adequate time to demonstrate their knowledge and skills without rushing. Unit 1 will be available in January and June, and the other units will be available in June.
We'll have a network of advisors in place to provide support, advice and guidance on course delivery
AQA – enabling you to make informed decisions
