Our new specification reflects the relevance of philosophy to a wide range of contemporary issues and is interesting and engaging for teachers and students. Students will tackle questions such as whether individuals should behave morally, and why do we value art.
What's the new specification like?
The specification reflects a wide range of contemporary issues, including whether we should behave morally, how we're bound by rules, tolerance, and the existence of God. It's a modern and accessible specification that offers teachers the flexibility to design a course to suit their own and their students' interests. Importantly, it also develops a broad skill set that prepares students for higher education and employment.
AS will give students a broad introduction to the key concepts in philosophy, with a choice of familiar themes plus some new ones – tolerance, the value of art, and freewill and determinism.
At A2 students will study a key theme in depth and examine philosophical problems through the study of a key text – Hume, Plato, Mill, Descartes or Nietzsche.
What will the exams be like?
At AS and A2 there will be a choice of questions and our questions are always designed to enable students to best demonstrate their knowledge and we ensure they have time to show what they've learned without rushing. Pick up a leaflet or look on our website for more detailed information.
When can students take the exams?
You have flexibility to enter students for January and June examinations. Both AS units will be available from January 2010 and both A2 units from January 2011.
