AQA Psychology B – a new A-level specification
Studying psychology gives students an insight into the challenges they face in everyday life. Our new Psychology B specification is based firmly on the existing specification and retains the features you told us you like - the emphasis on approaches at AS, and perspectives and debates at A2, and the applied nature of the questions makes the exams interesting and stimulating for students and provides a true test of their understanding.
Importantly, QCA has agreed with us and classified psychology as a science, and our exciting new specification reflects that change. By studying both psychological research and scientific methodology, students gain a broad skill set that prepares them for higher education or a wide range of potential careers.
What's the new specification like?
The specification is designed to be interesting and engaging to both you and your students. It's a contemporary, flexible and accessible course that provides you with options to best match your interests and those of your students.
So AS will cover key approaches, gender and research methods in Unit 1 and Social, Cognitive and Individual Differences in Unit 2.
At A2, the specification offers a choice of three Child Development options
plus five other applied areas in Unit 3
In Unit 4 students will compare different approaches to psychology, and study debates such as nature versus nurture, and psychology and science. They'll also further develop their understanding of research methods.
What will the exams be like?
Much of the assessment style will be familiar – a mix of short answers and longer essay-style questions. Our questions are always designed to enable students to best demonstrate their knowledge and we ensure they have time to show what they've learned without rushing. Pick up a leaflet or look on our website for more detailed information.
When can students take the exams?
You have flexibility to enter students for January and June examinations. Both AS units will be available from January 2009 and A2 unit 3 will be available from January 2010.
AQA – enabling you to make informed decisions
We believe our new specification balances continuity and innovation, offering you the opportunity to continue with tried and tested topics, but also offering the chance to find new and exciting areas to explore with your students.
