AQA GCE Sociology – a new A-level specification
Sociology is a subject that students can relate to. It's relevant to their everyday lives so they can immediately engage with the subject even if they haven't studied it before. Studying sociology encourages students to develop critical and reflective thinking skills, and a respect for social diversity, - useful skills to take to higher education and working life.
AQA is the market leader in GCE Sociology. In developing a new specification we wanted to keep the changes to a minimum and bring the content up to date.
What's the new specification like?
AS gives students a broad knowledge and understanding of the social processes and social change that affect their everyday lives.
There's a choice of topics, so you can choose areas that interest you and your students.
Families and Households
Health
Education
Wealth, Poverty and Welfare
Culture and Identity
Sociological methods
From the start, students are encouraged to see the links between the different areas of Sociology, through two core sociological themes
At A2 there is the opportunity to for more detailed study and specialisation. Again, there's a choice of topics, so you can create a course that suits you and your students. As in AS, the topic areas have been updated to reflect current sociological thinking.
Power and Politics
Beliefs in Society
Global Development
Theory and Methods
Crime and Deviance
Stratification and Differentiation
Mass Media
What do the exams look like?
And the questions papers will look very similar to the current questions. So you won't have to get used to a new style and format of exam paper.
You'll have the flexibility to enter students in January as well as June. Both AS units will be available from January 2009 and both A2 units will be available from January 2010.
AQA – enabling you to make informed decisions
Our new specification blends the best of the current AQA Sociology specification with updated content and all the support you'll need. We believe it's the right choice for you and your students.
