A-level Mathematics
- The structure of the A-level course consists of four units which is in line with most re-developed GCE specifications
- To complete the A-level assessment requirements, candidates must complete two core units of pure mathematics plus two application units
- The AS Pure Core unit includes both a calculator and non-calculator section
- Overall the content of the specification remains as at present
- The style of some questions, particularly at A2, is different to the current examinations to incorporate ‘stretch and challenge’ and the inclusion of ‘proof’ and unstructured problem-solving questions.
Update: December 2007
- AQA has developed practice papers for the AS and A2 Core units. A meeting for pilot centres was held in early December, where the use of these materials was considered and reviewed. Support was offered to pilot centres on the teaching approaches for inclusion of ‘stretch and challenge’, proof and problem solving, particularly at A2 level.
