GCSE Maths Linked Pair Pilot case study

The Government launched a national trial of linked Maths GCSEs in 2009 and AQA’s Linked Pair pilot has successfully completed its first year as part of that trial.

Read our case study about how the pilot is benefiting teachers and students at Roseland Community College in Cornwall. Beth Haslam, Teaching Team Leader for Maths at the school, also shares her views on why AQA support has been invaluable.

English Bacc

The introduction of the new English Bacc affects every school in the country.   To achieve the English Bacc, a student must gain A* to C grades for a number of qualifications in different subject components. Find out which qualifications are included in the English component at our English Bacc web pages.

2011 exams update

Our question paper style and how our examiners will mark long answers on screen
As confirmed in December 2009 and March 2010 , exams with separate question papers and answer books (unconstrained answer books) will use the new:

  • simplified, two-digit question numbering system
  • style of answer book with spaces for candidates to write the two-digit question numbers.

Here is confirmation of the approach taken in your subject:

GCSE Maths Linked Pair Pilot

GCSE Methods in Maths

This acknowledges the subject as challenging and fulfilling in its own right, by concentrating on maths technique and problem solving

GCSE Application of Maths

This focuses on Maths as an essential tool for life and work, including everyday and financial contexts

How do the linked qualifications work?

We have long agreed with the view of many teachers – also advocated in the Smith Report – that Maths study at GCSE level, like other core subjects, should be rewarded by more than one qualification. Now the Government is addressing the issue by trialling a linked pair of GCSE qualifications.

First teaching of the pilot commences in September 2010 and will continue until summer 2013. If successful, the pilot should then extend seamlessly into a nationally available specification for first teaching from September 2015.

The pilot is intended to appeal to students whether they have a passion for Maths or simply want to learn more of this core subject. The involvement and input of practising teachers is crucial to the success of this pilot.

Students must enter both qualifications to cover the statutory Key Stage 4 Programme of Study. Together, the two GCSEs cover the entire content of the single GCSE Maths and much more, with the opportunity to study in greater depth.
