The preliminary material (research theme) will be repeated within the question paper for use in the exam.

Unit 2 (CIST2)

You are required to be involved in a range of citizenship activities:

  • These activities can take place in the classroom, in school, college or in the wider community.
  • The exams officer at your accommodating centre should give you a copy of the Active Citizenship Profile, which you should use to record your participation.
  • As part of the assessment for Unit 2, you should bring your completed Active Citizenship Profile into the exam and you can use the information contained in the profile to analyse and evaluate your own evidence and reflection in response to the questions set.
  • After the exam, your Active Citizenship Profile will be kept securely by your accommodating centre until after the deadline for enquiries about results and may be requested by AQA.

Unit 4 (CIST4)

You will undertake a study in regard to one of two pre-released topics.

  • This will involve you undertaking research into the background of the issues involved, the nature and roles of the key players and how change may be brought about to resolve issues.
  • The topics may relate to any section or sections of the course.
  • The topics for the June 2015 exam series will be pre-released and available from your accommodating centre from 1 November 2014 to allow you to undertake some background research.

Unit 2 (DANC2) (coursework unit)

You must be attending an AQA centre that will supervise and mark DANC2. Questions are set and pre-released by AQA in November 2014, and you select one for study. You should contact the exams officer at your accommodating centre to ensure that you have access to this material.

Unit 4 (DANC4)

A question paper is issued annually in the autumn term, with a choice of questions for the group dance. You should contact the exams officer at your accommodating centre to ensure that you have access to this material.

Withdrawal of this specification

There is a new Philosophy specification (see 2175 above) for first teaching in September 2014 with the first AS exam in June 2015 and the first full A-level exam in June 2016. 

Candidates certificating the AS award for the first time in June 2015 and thereafter and/or the Advanced award for the first time in June 2016 and thereafter must follow the new specification.

June 2015 is the final opportunity for the assessment of PHIL1 and PHIL2 and for candidates to claim the AS subject award. The Advanced Subsidiary units (PHIL1 and PHIL2) and AS certification (1171) will be available in June 2015 only as follows

  • Candidates who have previously certificated the AS award (1171) may re-sit one or both AS units and re-certificate the AS award
  • Candidates who have previously taken both AS units and who are taking units 3 and 4 and certificating the Advanced award in June 2015 may re-sit one or both AS units and certificate the AS award (in addition to the Advanced award)
  • Candidates who have previously taken either PHIL1 or PHIL2 but who have not previously certificated the AS award may take the complementary AS unit and certificate the AS award
  • Candidates who have not previously taken any AS or A2 units may sit all four units and certificate the Advanced award: the AS award will not be available for certification in this case.

June 2015 is the final opportunity for the assessment of PHIL3 and PHIL4. A final, re-sit only opportunity for units PHIL3 and PHIL4 will be available in June 2016, which will also be the final opportunity for candidates to claim the Advanced subject award (2171).

Unit 4 (SCIS4)

A selection of background material on a topical scientific issue will be available through the exams officer at your accommodating centre around 1 May (at least six weeks prior to the exam). The issue chosen for this case study will be chosen for topical interest and to exemplify aspects of How Science Works.

The range of documents provided for study is likely to include 

  • news article(s) from the popular press
  • longer review article(s) from popular media (weekend newspapers, general magazines)
  • article(s) from general science magazines (such as New Scientist, Scientific American)
  • material from specialist scientific sources aimed at informing the general public (such as general publications from the British Association for the Advancement of Science, Royal Society, research councils)
  • paper(s) from scientific journals (edited where necessary to remove excessive detail and to emphasise the form of the paper and the argument – detailed understanding of complex science explanation in a specialist area will not be expected).
