We have carefully considered the future of our Level 1/2 Certificates (IGCSEs) in the light of government changes to GCSEs and have decided not to develop new L1/2 Certificates in English Language or English Literature.

The last exams for students taking the current qualifications will be in the June 2016 series, with a final re-sit opportunity for English Language in November 2016.

As alternatives, you may like to consider our new GCSEs in English Language and English Literature which are accredited for first teaching in September 2015 and are equal to the best qualifications available internationally.

Find out more about these changes and which qualifications we are planning to offer in the future. You can also read the 20 January 2015 update about AQA Level 1/2 Certificates in performance measure tables.

Our Level 1/2 Certificates in English Language and English Literature (IGCSEs) count as the English measure in school performance tables from 2014 onwards. Read the 24 October 2014 update about AQA Level 1/ 2 Certificates in performance measure tables.

Our English IGCSEs are stimulating for students and flexible to teach.

For English Language you can choose from two assessment options:

  • speaking and listening (10%) and two exams (50% and 40%), or
  • speaking and listening (10%), an exam (50%) and coursework (40%), with no controlled assessment.

For English Literature you can choose from:

  • two exams, or
  • an exam (60%) and coursework (40%), with no controlled assessment.

There are several ways you can approach and structure your course: for example, you can teach the whole course in one year. Students have a wider choice over their coursework topics and teachers can pick texts that appeal.
