Updated Projects specifications

Friday 3 Jul 2015

Over the years you have given us lots of feedback on our project specifications and production logs. You asked us to make the specifications and production logs shorter, clearer and easier to use and understand. In this update to the Projects Qualifications we have made these clarifications.

You were very happy with the assessment objectives, assessment criteria and the project process itself, so these will stay exactly the same. We have not made any changes to the assessment objectives, assessment criteria or to the project process.

Also if you have already started your students off using the current specification and production logs then please do continue with them as the updated versions are designed to be compatible.

The new specification is available now and the production log is available on the Administration page.

Specification updates

Current Specification
(last exams June 2014)

New Specification
(first teaching September 2015)

Spec 20 pages long.

Spec 18 pages long. We wanted our specification to be as clear and concise as possible.

You told us that the specification was not always clear and in plain English.

We have ensured that the spec uses plain English throughout, plus a glossary of terms at the start of the spec to clarify where terms have changed.

You told us that descriptions of the expectations of the student, supervisor and centre coordinator spread across several pages were not clear and were difficult to find.

We have now clearly defined and collated on one page the expectations of the student, supervisor and centre coordinator.

You told us that you found the expectations for students producing an artefact confusing.

We have presented more clearly the expectations for students producing an artefact and accompanying research based written report.

You asked for more guidance about overlap between the projects and other qualifications.

We have extended the description of dual accreditation and the extend and develop guidance.

You told us that it was not clear where students should have a working title or a final title.

We have added the terms working and final title where appropriate to clarify this.

Production log updates

Old Production Log

New Production Log

You told us signing every page of the production log took too much time.

We have taken out the signatures. Now the only sections requiring signatures are:

  • Record of marks
  • Project Proposal (1 signature each from student, supervisor and centre coordinator)
  • Presentation part B.

For the other sections, students now just have to date the page and sign the declaration.

You told us that section titles did not make clear who was to complete the section or what was to be done:

  • Record of initial planning
  • Project proposal part A
  • Project proposal part B
  • Project approval: part C.

We have changed these to:

  • Record of initial ideas
  • Part A: Candidate Proposal
  • Supervisor comments on Candidate Proposal
  • Part C: Centre Coordinator approval of Candidate Proposal.

You told us that the text boxes were too small for people to hand write.

We have made some text boxes bigger and the phrase 'continue on a separate sheet if necessary' has been added where appropriate.

You told us that it was not clear where students should have a working title or a final title.

We have added the terms working and final title clarify this. Students specify a working title at the proposal stage and a final title at mid project review.

You told us that it was not clear that students were to fill in the section 'Your supervisor's main comments and advice'.

We have rephrased this to:

  • My summary of the comments and advice from my supervisor.
