Entry Level Certificate Science (ELC Science) is designed to give students not yet ready to take GCSE Science the chance to get a Science qualification. It can help motivate students who achieve the award to move on to the next level.
Three levels of award are available – Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3, with Entry 3 being the most demanding.
It integrates the principles of 'How Science Works' throughout the six components. Students should be encouraged to study as many of the six components as they are able. They need only submit evidence for:
- 3 teacher devised assignments
- 3 externally set assessments.
These must be from at least three components, one from each science.
Each of the two components for Biology, Chemistry and Physics matches closely the content of sections in the AQA GCSE Science A and GCSE Science B specifications. The same set of skills and knowledge are assessed but with lower demands. This means that the course can be co-taught. If teachers think it is suitable, students can be entered for both qualifications in the same series.
ELC Science is a worthwhile course in terms of general education and lifelong learning for students of various ages and from diverse backgrounds. The skills, knowledge and understanding acquired will be relevant and useful in both education and vocational settings.
