We’ve developed a qualification which is a Level 1/2 Technical Award in sport which is intended to introduce youngsters to the practical application of learning about the sports industry. This Technical Award is available alongside the new GCSE PE.
We’ve designed it for the more practically minded learners who will be given the opportunity to shine through their playing of sports. There’s an awful lot of practical skills that we associate with managing events and organising events.
One of the things that we are going to be doing in the second unit of the qualification is not only introducing learners to working with others in a mentoring capacity, but also taking on a leadership and kind of management role, so they get to organise events and make sure that health and safety requirements are satisfied and work together as a team as well as individually. There is a huge range of sports that they can choose from. We wanted it to be as inclusive as we possibly could.
So there may be some sports that centres deliver outside of the curriculum which would also be able to count towards this qualification. The transferable skills we are hoping to develop in our learners are things such as leadership, team work, problem solving – we’re hoping to do that through the practical application of the assessments, so for example if a youngster is being assessed on their ability to coach a group of people we’re hoping that the leadership that will come through that, and also the evaluation they will have to do for their peers and also for them will aid communication.
So we’re looking to develop confidence, taking control of situations, relying on peer feedback, issuing that feedback, also doing some appraising of their own – an evaluation of how they are doing and how can they improve themselves in the future. And these are all those sorts of skills that will stand them in very good stead.
