The role of multiple choice questions
Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are used in conjunction with other question types (such as essay and short answer questions). Well-written MCQs form a vital part of AQA's offering and contribute to robust assessment.
MCQs are useful because:
- they can cover any aspect of the subject's specification; therefore students are encouraged to revise all topics, which fosters a better understanding of the subject in context
- they can examine both knowledge recall and comprehension, as well as interpretation and analysis
- they can test across the entire range of ability, which helps to differentiate the achievement of students.
