Assessing collaborative group work
New resources to help assess collaborative problem solving skills in the classroom.
Our researchers teamed up with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education to find out what makes good collaborative problem solving.
This project has led to the creation of a collaborative problem solving resource pack complete with video clips to show the skills and techniques needed for good collaborative problem solving.
Download your Collaborative problem solving resources and use them to run your own sessions and assess classroom collaboration among student groups (ideally 2 to 5 individuals).
We’ve included templates for assessment materials so you can run collaborative problem solving sessions with groups of students and give them the feedback they need to grow in confidence and learn new skills.
Problem solving skills for the workplace
As well as in the classroom, collaborative problem solving is an important skill for the future.
Young people spend increasing amounts of time collaborating online, but the skills involved in face-to-face collaboration are still as important, and can be taught in schools. Our research found that some of the skills students need to learn are how to:
- invite ideas from others
- build on the ideas of others
- ask questions to clarify ideas
- justify ideas through reasoning
- resolve disagreements through discussion.
Our collaborative problem solving resource pack will enable you to assess skills like these and help your students to develop and prepare for the future.
