GCSE and A-level Media Studies NEA: use of non-original material for 2023
Published: Tuesday 5 Jul 2022
The non-exam assessment (NEA) briefs for submission in 2023 were released on 1 March 2022. For students submitting their NEA in 2023 and onwards, we have clarification about the use of non-original material in their work.
With the exception of musical performances and existing company logos, students should not use any non-original material in their media products. Existing company logos can include those from social media, age restriction ratings and barcodes. The use of existing logos does not apply where an original logo is required as part of the brief, this must be created by the student.
All other images, footage and text is to be created by the student. If a student does use any non-original images, footage or text, they should be aware that their marks will be limited by the marking criteria. All non-original material must be acknowledged on the candidate record form.
Students do not have to write and record their own musical performances, either to use as part of a soundtrack or in a music video. Musical tracks that they use should be acknowledged on the candidate record form.
For the 2022 series Ofqual permitted the use of all non-original material. There are no planned changes to 2023 submission.
