Step Up to English (5970) NEA tasks for 2021

Published: Wednesday 30 Sep 2020

Each year we replace our non-exam assessment (NEA) topics, one for each component to the bank of externally-set tasks.

For the 2021 assessments, we’ve introduced two new NEA topics and schemes of work.

New topics and schemes of work for 2021

  • Component 1: Hobbies
  • Component 2: Myths and Legends

The new topics can be found in the secure key materials (SKM) area of our secure extranet e-AQA. The schemes of work will be available in the teach tab on our qualifications pages shortly.

Topics to be removed after summer 2021

Component 1: Media and Component 2: Fashion have a one year’s shelf life remaining and are valid for submission in January and June 2021 only. They’ll be removed after the 2021 exams.

Topics removed after summer 2020

Component 1: Travel and Component 2: Adventure topics have now expired and are no longer valid for submission. You can still use these as practice/mock assessments for your students.

We’re aware that some schools withdrew their entries for Summer 2020 having completed one of these expired tasks. We’re speaking to Ofqual about these special circumstances and we’ll be in touch about this soon.

To help you prepare for NEA in the coming year:

  • refer to our Notes and guidance: Non-exam assessment found in the assess tab.
  • download NEA Reports on the exam from e-AQA secure key materials (SKM).
  • access all NEA forms and contact your designated NEA adviser on our NEA pages.

Access arrangements

For guidance on some of the more common access arrangements for our ELC Step-Up to English qualification, please refer to page 6 of our Notes and guidance: Non-exam assessment. This should be read in conjunction with the latest JCQ Regulations and Guidance.
