Technical Awards – new, practical qualifications to inspire and engage 14-16 year-olds
Published: Monday 4 Jul 2016
AQA has developed a suite of practical qualifications that 14-16 year-olds can take alongside their GCSEs.
The new Technical Awards are designed to inspire and engage young people, particularly those who enjoy a 'hands on' approach to learning.
They'll equip learners with the practical, transferable skills and core knowledge they need to progress to further general or vocational study, including Level 3 qualifications, employment or apprenticeships.
We've worked with teachers, employers and industry to help give young learners the best possible introduction to their chosen vocational area(s).
There are nine individual qualifications. Find out about each of them below, and have a look at our introductory video:
- Performing Arts
- Children's Learning and Development
- Health and Social Care
- Fashion and Textiles
- Visual Communication
- Materials Technology
- Food and Catering
The specifications are being submitted to the Department for Education for approval this September.
If approved, a single award will be equivalent to a GCSE qualification and will count towards performance tables. They could then be included in Progress 8 as part of the non-Ebacc open group of subjects.
We are also piloting a STEM Technical award, ready for first teaching in September 2018.
