Technical Awards update

Monday 4 Sep 2017

We’re delighted to announce that AQA’s Level 1/2 Technical Award in Performing Arts has been approved and will be included in 2019 performance tables. We will publish the updated specification on our website shortly.

The Department for Education (DfE) has now published the Final Update to the list of approved qualifications that will be eligible for inclusion in the 2019 performance tables for technical and vocational qualifications. Unfortunately, our remaining Technical Awards specifications have not been approved.

The DfE have advised us of some further changes that are needed to our draft specifications in the following subjects:

  • Children's Learning and Development
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • Food and Catering
  • Health and Social Care
  • IT
  • Material Technology
  • Sport
  • STEM
  • Visual Communication.

We remain absolutely committed to ensuring that these exciting new qualifications are wholly fit for purpose and suitable for learners and teachers alike. We intend to resume the development of the nine subjects listed above, working towards inclusion in the 2020 performance tables. This work will continue until Easter 2018. We're actively seeking additional guidance from the DfE to help us achieve this, and ensure longevity within our vocational offering at Level 1/2.

In the meantime, schools and colleges can teach the existing draft specifications if they chose to do so. However, centres should carefully consider the following points before making any final decisions:

  • we will not be offering an exam series for these draft specifications in 2018
  • these draft qualifications will not be eligible for performance points in 2019
  • all draft Technical Award specifications are subject to change, either in content or assessment
  • a decision as to whether to certificate in summer 2019 will be taken by Easter 2018.

Therefore, continuing to teach these draft qualifications at this stage means accepting the risk that the qualification may not be offered in 2019, and that the content or assessment may change.
