Summary of changes

AQA’s unique and flexible approach to assessment meets the requirements of teaching A-Level History in a linear context. Our specification allows skills and knowledge to be developed in tandem over the two-year course. The Year 13 curriculum directly follows on from what is studied in Year 12, ensuring the students have a thorough understanding of their course of study. This also allows you to co-teach AS students alongside A-Level students.

Paper 1: Breadth study

The key questions within each breadth study provide a focus for the coverage of prescribed content. Breadth studies allow students to assess change over a broad period of time, with reference to various perspectives.

1A: The Age of the Crusades, c.1071−1204

Amongst changes to content, there is a greater emphasis on the origins of the crusades and also the counter-crusades.

This option closely resembles the current unit 1A The Crusading Movement and the Latin East 1095−1204 in its general content, although there is an expectation that students will be able to assess change over a broad period of time as it affected both the crusader states and neighbouring societies.

1B: Spain in the Age of Discovery, 1469−1598

Amongst changes to the content, there is greater emphasis on Spain during the era of Ferdinand and Isabella and also the reign of Phillip II. Spain’s foreign policy and empire status feature more strongly.

This option both closely resembles the current unit 3C The Emergence of a Great Power Spain 1492−1556 in its central content, and develops it by extending the years to be studied.

This option allows students to study the Soviet Union and its satellites during a period of political crisis, rebellion and repression. Assessment

Introduction

The new A-level qualification has three assessed components. There are two examinations and one non-exam assessment, taken after two years of study.

Paper One is a Breadth Study looking at change and development over a broad period of time. It assesses A01 and A03.

Paper Two is a Depth Study looking at a specific development or period of change. It assesses A01 and A02.

The non-exam assessment covers A01, A02 and A03.

Although AS continues as a stand-alone qualification and can be co-taught as a part of the A-level course, the marks from the AS papers do not count towards the final A-level grade.

The current two assessment objectives have been revised to create three new ones. New style questions testing the analysis and evaluations of interpretations (A03) and sources (A02) form part of the examination papers.

There are familiar ‘essay style’ questions testing A01. Levels of response mark schemes have been updated but are similar to the outgoing specification.
