Changes for 2021

This page may be out of date

The Government announced on 6 January that exams won’t go ahead as normal in summer 2021, so some of this information may change. We’ll update this page as soon as further detail becomes available.

Following Ofqual's announcement about summer 2021, here’s what you need to know for Tech-level Engineering: Design.

Please note: these changes only apply to assessment being completed this academic year.

Enabling remote access

Advisory and verification meetings with your External Quality Assurer (EQA) will be carried out remotely by Zoom (or Skype).

Internally-assessed units will now be uploaded to ShareFile or posted to your EQA.

Extended validity of assignments

The shelf-life of the 2019-2020 Externally-Set Assignments that would ordinarily have expired in August 2020 has been extended. This will allow centres to submit them in either the January 2021 or June 2021 series. The extension will be applicable only for students registered for the qualifications before summer 2020 and who only partially completed the assignment.

EQAs will be in contact with centres and will be available to provide guidance and support throughout the year.

Further details can also be found in the section below for those units where centres may need to alter requirements regarding access to equipment and technical support.

Remote assembly (Unit 2)

Unit 2 requires assembly only. This could be done remotely, where required, without undue difficulty. All of the preparation, drawing and planning can be carried out remotely, as required. However, you are reminded that this must still be the candidates own work.

Demonstrating teamwork (Unit 5)

Unit 5 requires teamwork to be evidenced. All of the preparation and planning can be carried out remotely, as required, using conferencing software. In the event that your school cannot safely allow learners to work together in a workshop to complete the practical work required, you are advised to allow students to take on different practical tasks independently, to ensure successful completion of the project work as a team. Any making tasks using CAM equipment can be done by designing using CAD and technician support to cut out the final pieces. Assembly and joining and finishing tasks could be done remotely, without issue.

Using CAD (Unit 8)

Unit 8 is a mechatronics unit and those centres who have registered students on this qualification can achieve this unit through design using CAD.

No other changes

There are no changes to the assessment criteria for Tech-level Engineering but teachers should alter the way they teach the course according to their facilities and situation.

All sections of the specification will remain the same for 2021. There are no planned changes to the specification content and all content should be covered. The style of the exams and associated mark scheme will be familiar.

Help and support

Please contact your EQA if you need additional support and guidance.

If you don’t know who your EQA is, your exams officer will have these details, they can be found in Gateway, or you can contact us.
