Changes for 2022

Because of the ongoing impacts of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there are some changes to how ELC Science will be assessed in 2022.

These changes are for 2022 only.

What you need to know

  • Practical activities not required for Skill B of the Teacher-devised assignments (TDAs)
  • For other skill areas, students can use data and ideas from teacher demonstrations

Practical activities not required for Skill B of the Teacher devised assignments (TDAs)

For 2022 only, students are not required to carry out the practical activities to gain marks for Skill B of the Teacher-devised assignments (TDAs).

However, students should still carry out practical work whenever they are able to do so.

All students should be given the maximum marks for Skill B.

Practical demonstrations allowed for other skills

For the other skill areas (A, C, D and E), in which students plan, record, present and identify patterns and relationships in data collected from practical activities, you are allowed to use teacher demonstrations or simulations from which students record the data themselves.

Students still need to plan how they would investigate the problem and provide evidence of their planning for assessment of Skill A (experimental design) even though their method may not be carried out. Students should still carry out the practical if possible.

No other changes

There are no planned changes to the content or format and style of assessment for the Externally-Set Assignments (ESAs).
