A-level Dance: Component 1 – arrangements for summer 2023

Published: Wednesday 7 Sep 2022

The Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual have confirmed the arrangements for subject content in GCSE, AS and A-levels and non-exam assessment (NEA) in qualifications taking place in the 2022 to 2023 academic year. For students taking exams in summer 2023, the usual arrangements for NEA are now in place.

For summer 2023, we’re returning to visiting exams for Component 1: Performance and Choreography.

The summer 2023 visiting window will run between 1 March and 31 May 2023. Your allocated examiner will be in touch with you during the autumn term, before the window opens, to arrange your visit.

To support your teaching for next summer, here’s a reminder of the specification requirements for A-level Dance.

Performance

  • Students will perform a solo dance for a minimum of two minutes. The maximum duration of the complete dance must be no longer than three minutes.
  • Students will also perform in a quartet for a minimum of three minutes and a maximum of four minutes.
  • The assessment grids are available in section 4.5 (page 31) of the specification, which you can download from our specification pages.

Choreography

  • Students create a complete group dance which lasts for a minimum of three minutes to a maximum of four minutes for three, four or five dancers.
  • The student should not perform in the dance themselves nor act, for example, as accompanist or sound operator.
  • Choreography papers will be available on Centre Services on 15 September.
  • The assessment grids are available in section 4.5 (page 31) of the specification, which you can download from our specification pages.

The time penalty will apply as normal to the minimum as well as to the maximum time requirement for performance and choreography. The size of the reduction will be proportionate to the severity of the timing infringement, starting with 5% of the total available raw mark for work.
