GCSE Geography: new and updated resources to support teaching and learning

Published: Wednesday 28 Feb 2024

We're delighted to announce two new and updated resources to support you in teaching our GCSE Geography specification.

New answers and commentaries

We've created new example student answers and commentaries for all examined components (8035/1, 8035/2, 8035/3). The resources can be found on our secure website, Centre Services.

To find these resources, follow the steps below:

  • Log in to Centre Services
  • Select 'Resources'
  • Select 'Assessment and training'
  • Click 'Geography’
  • Under 'Qualification', tick 'GCSE'
  • Under 'Resource type', tick 'Answers and commentary'

You'll find learner responses to questions from the 2023 exams, along with a level (if applicable), a mark and a commentary from the lead examiner explaining the reason for the mark given, and where appropriate, advice and guidance on how the response could be improved.

The answers and commentaries can be used to support learners preparing for their exams. They can also be used as a resource to standardise marking across your department.

Updated LIC/NEE case study student and teacher workbook

As part of our ongoing commitment for ensuring a more inclusive and diverse landscape in our Geography qualifications, we're delighted to announce that we've updated our Lower Income Country (LIC) and Newly Emerging Economy (NEE) case study booklets to support your teaching and learning in this area.

The guides can be found in 'Teaching resources' on our GCSE Geography qualification page.

The guides have been updated by teachers of the specification and the AQA Curriculum team in the context of Nigeria (a newly emerging economy in West Africa) to reflect the importance of anti-racist geography; to consider the content through a non-white western lens and to think critically about sources of information used to exemplify case studies for each required specification point.

The resource includes both a teacher and student workbook providing teaching activities and resources to support them, alongside the rationale for each specified activity, to explain why we've chosen to deliver the content in this way. This will help you feel more confident in making your geography teaching more diverse.

The approach we've taken here can be adapted to any other location teachers choose to teach in this area of content. We hope that this encourages schools to evaluate their approach to certain units and especially case studies which highlight differences between places and people.
