Science Hub School Network - Spring 2020

Course summary

Written and run by AQA science specialists, these termly twilight sessions are aimed at supporting you in improving your understanding of our specifications and assessments.

Each term we look at a different theme or skill area that teachers have said they would like more help with. The extensive support materials, using students' responses, can then be used back in school with your teachers and students to develop these important skills and techniques

In each session we will share any relevant updates and resource developments from AQA and our AQA family.

These free, local twilight sessions are an ideal opportunity to enhance your science community by networking with other science teachers, sharing ideas and best practice.

Course description

The focus of this term's meeting is on understanding assessment of maths skills in the GCSE sciences. In the meeting we will cover the following topics.

  • Mock exams: How are students coping with them compared with last year? Are students having the same challenges as in the summer 2019 papers? Preparing students for the future.
  • Maths in GCSE sciences: Looking particularly at three areas that students find challenging (significant figures, standard form and graph plotting) we discuss how we assess the DfE maths in science requirements at different levels of demand, and explore ideas for incorporating them into your teaching.
  • Updates: new and updated resources on the AQA website to help you in your teaching.

Suitable for

Current and potential teachers of GCSE Science.
