Switch to AQA GCSE Maths

Hello, my name is Shaun Procter-Green, I'm the Maths Assessment Lead at AQA. I work full-time and I'm Chief Examiner for GCSE Maths. This summer we've seen the changes come in that we talked about and we promised to do. We removed the multiple-choice questions from the beginning and replaced them with some nice open settling questions, so that even the weakest students could have a go at and succeed. And we've looked very carefully at our wording, our context, the order that we put the questions in and the ramping we do. We looked scientifically at how past questions have performed, and how we think the questions for this summer would perform as well.

I'm surrounded by an excellent team. We feel we've got together some of the very best assessment expertise for mathematics that's available and we work non-stop to try and get the best possible assessments for you. One of the things, of course, that's been happening over the last few years is that standards have been moving around due to COVID. But now in 2023 we've arrived back to more-or-less the standard from 2019.

What we can now promise you is that we will now move forward and be consistent in how we deliver. You have told us what you would like to see in the assessments - we've listened to you, and I've used my 25 years of teaching experience, as well as others’ teaching experience - because many of our writers and reviewers are currently in the classroom and working with students. We all know what it's like when students come out of their first exam. There's nothing worse than students in tears, students upset, feeling that it's gone very badly, and then you have to get them going again for their next exams.

So, we are building something here which we feel students can show what they know and be successful. The grade boundaries have got to a position we're happy with, and we can now move forward with consistency and hopefully give you something that you can trust in maths assessments.

60% of Foundation Tier students achieved half marks or more across the exam compared to 33% in 2019 before the pandemic.

In the Higher Tier, over 65% scored over half marks compared to 46% in 2019.
