GCSE and A-level Art and Design: arrangements for summer 2023

Published: Thursday 8 Sep 2022

The Department for Education (DfE) and Ofqual have confirmed the arrangements for subject content in GCSE, AS and A-levels and non-exam assessment (NEA) in qualifications taking place in the 2022 to 2023 academic year. For students taking exams in summer 2023, the usual arrangements for NEA are now in place.

In 2022, Ofqual removed the requirement for Component 2 to be assessed. For 2023, this will be returning as normal. Please re-visit the original specifications for GCSE Art and Design (8201-8206) and A-level Art and Design (7201-7206) for more information on Component 2 and how this should be assessed.

To support your teaching, here’s a reminder of the specification requirements for GCSE and A-level Art and Design for 2023.

For summer 2023

  • The externally set assignments will be sent to you before the exam period starts. We send these materials before we have the final entries data, and we ask you to submit estimated your entries for each title, so we know how many copies you’ll need.
  • The externally set assignments will also be made available on Centre Services on the day they are released:
    • 2 January 2023 for GCSE
    • 1 February 2023 for A-level.
  • Following this date there is a preparatory period followed by 10 hours (GCSE) or 15 hours (A-level) of supervised time. The first two (GCSE) or three (A-level) hours of the supervised time must be consecutive.
  • The supervised time must take place under the guidelines set out in the Joint Council for Qualifications’ (JCQ) instructions for the conduct of examinations
  • Students must stop work on their preparatory work as soon as the first period of supervised time starts. Students may refer to their preparatory work in the supervised time, but it must not be added to or amended.
  • The work produced during the supervised time must be clearly identified.
  • Preparatory work and the work produced during the 10 or 15 hours of supervised time will be assessed together, as a whole, against all four assessment objectives.
  • You will mark the work out of 96.
  • Visiting moderation will take place in June as usual.

Teacher standardisation meetings

For summer 2023 we’re hosting our free face-to-face standardisation meetings throughout the country. The standardisation meetings will take place in the autumn and spring terms and will:

  • be available to every school or college (two delegates per school or college only)
  • have live exhibitions of students’ work covering all six titles and a range of marks at each level, showcasing different approaches from schools and colleges around the country
  • provide opportunities to network with other teachers
  • provide opportunities to talk to presenters on a one-to-one basis
  • give reminder notes including key dates and administration procedures, useful contacts and links to resources, given to each school or college attending
  • provide delegate handbook full of useful guidance
  • list full sets of work on Centre Services alongside reminder notes and commentaries.

You can book your place at teacher standardisation and the twilight sessions from mid-September on our professional development page.
