Tech-level qualifications

We’ve worked with employers and professional bodies to design, structure and concept test our Tech-levels. They help fill a workplace skills gap identified by employers and CBI surveys, and respond to government reform.

We knew that to help learners secure places in Higher Education and employment, we had to build what employers, universities and colleges wanted. We’ve contextualised essential transferable skills – such as team working and communication – so that our qualifications go one step further in preparing learners for employment, a higher or advanced apprenticeship, or further academic study.

We believe that we’ve created qualifications that offer a wider choice of opportunities, and a real alternative to A-levels and other vocational qualifications. To find out more about our Tech-level offering, see our introduction to Level 3 technical and vocational qualifications brochure.

Exams officers should refer to our guide to managing Tech-level qualifications.

Level 3 Technical Levels - New specifications for first teaching September 2016

Tech-levels included in Department for Education performance tables for 2017

Our new Level 3 technical qualifications are approved by the Department for Education (DfE) for inclusion in the 2017 school and college performance tables for 16 to 19 year olds.

Schools and colleges are able to deliver any qualifications they deem appropriate for their learners, however, only those vocational qualifications on the DfE list will be counted in performance measures, including the newly announced Technical Baccalaureate.

See the DfE’s list of all qualifications approved for inclusion in the performance tables.
