AQA are an educational charity committed to helping students and teachers realise their potential. We’re looking to add to our Lead Assessment Writers and an Item Writer to our teams to support the delivery of AS Mathematics.

We’re looking for an Item Writer and Lead Assessment Writers to support the delivery of our AS Mathematics specifications.

There isn’t a significant time commitment for these roles which can be undertaken alongside a full-time teaching post. The roles are home-based, though you may be required to attend a small number of meetings across the year via Microsoft Teams.

Item Writer

What you’ll do
You’ll be responsible for creating items and appropriate supporting marking instructions, then act on constructive feedback from other members of the team. An “item” is the term we use for a question or task and the accompanying mark scheme. To write an item you need to be able to produce all of these elements in accordance with specific commissioning guidance.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience of teaching and/or marking AS/A-level Mathematics (within the last 3 years).
  • Experience of writing questions covering different topics and assessment objectives, and a comprehension of what makes a good question paper and mark scheme.
  • Receptive to feedback, consistently meeting deadlines and working within a collaborative environment.
  • The ability to work independently and write to a brief.

Lead Assessment Writer

What you’ll do

Lead Assessment Writers are needed for AS Maths paper 1 (7356/1) and AS Maths paper 2 (7356/2). The post holders will play a key role in the question paper production process by creating high quality question papers and mark schemes which reflect the requirements set out in a brief.

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Have expertise in AS/A-level Mathematics, with an in-depth knowledge of assessment and curriculum requirements.
  • Current or recent teaching experience (within the last 3 years).
  • Have experience of writing questions in an education setting and be able to write to a brief.
  • Have the ability to select appropriate sources for use in question papers, with an awareness of cultural sensitivities that may exist within our target markets.
  • Be able to evidence excellent attention to detail.
  • Be consistent in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.
  • Be open to receiving and incorporating constructive feedback.
  • Possess good IT skills - much of the role is computer based.

You’ll help shape assessments that reflect the diverse skills and understanding of students across the country. Your work will be essential in delivering assessments that meet the needs of both students and teachers.

  • 7041/1A: The Age of the Crusades c1071 - 1149
  • 7041/1F: Industrialisation and the people: Britain, c1783 - 1832
  • 7042/1F: Industrialisation and the people: Britain, c1783 - 1885

These roles can be worked flexibly and is designed to be carried out alongside full time teaching commitments. The roles are home-based, though you will be required to attend a small number of meetings across the year via Microsoft Teams.

What you’ll do

You’ll play a key role in the question paper production process by creating high quality question papers and mark schemes which reflect the requirements set out in a brief.

The tasks/undertakings required for the role would normally occur between the Planning meeting (early-mid Autumn) until paper sign off (by the following September).

In your applications personal statement, please provide evidence of:

  • Current or recent teaching experience (within the last 3 years), and excellent knowledge of the respective AS/A-level History topic/s.
  • Experience of writing questions in an education setting and a comprehension of what makes a good question paper and mark scheme.
  • Your ability to write to a brief.
  • Consistency in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.
  • Thriving in a team environment, actively seeking out feedback as part of a development process.

What you’ll do

You’ll check assessment materials to ensure that they are error free and meet their purpose as outlined in the planning phase. You will proofread and report on question papers to ensure the standard is appropriate for the target audience and fulfils the demands of the specification and assessment objectives.

The workload for these roles will fall between October to April

  • A sound understanding of good assessment practises.
  • Consistency in meeting deadlines and delivering work to a strict schedule.

Paper production

For some specifications, whole papers are planned, drafted, agreed and managed from beginning to end.

Exam delivery

Our exams and non-exam assessments (NEA) are marked by 30,000 examiners and moderators. Progress and quality is monitored by groups of associates, starting with standardisation and regular checking of marking through to awarding – where grade boundaries are set and applied to each student’s mark.
