Abstract
This report considers students sitting O-level and A-level examinations in 1956 and records their subsequent progression. It identifies entry patterns and pass rates of candidates from each of the most common centre types, and also looks at the differences between boys and girls.
Data was collected from centres in the autumn of 1956 to establish what actions candidates had taken after their O-level or A-level examinations. Following O-levels, pupils had the option to return to school in September to undertake A-levels, or to venture beyond the traditional schooling route.
Similarly, after completing A-levels, students had the opportunity to continue on to university or training colleges, or look for work. The report observed that while many candidates may have officially ‘finished with school’ after sitting their GCE examinations, those who wished to progress in their chosen career would continue with some form of schooling or training.
