Secondary Modern Schools and the General Certificate of Education

Abstract

This paper focuses on the General Certificate of Education (GCE) in relation to the needs of students from secondary modern schools.

The figures contained in the report show the number of secondary modern schools that entered candidates for the GCE from 1951 to 1954, and the number of candidates that were entered for Ordinary and Advanced subjects. More detailed data for 1954 includes a breakdown of entries by age and by the number of subjects taken. It also includes pass rates for individual subjects.

The data reveals an increase in the number of candidates being entered for the GCE. However, there is a decrease in the number of subjects per candidate.

The paper alludes to the difficulty in categorising secondary modern schools, and emphasises that this be taken into account when drawing any conclusions from the data.
