MAKING A WOODEN BOWL ON A WOODTURNING LATHE

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. dress appropriately for a workshop environment and working on a woodturning lathe

2. select suitable timber, (pre-cut bowl blank or natural timber log)

3. if applicable, measure, mark, and cut timber, use measuring equipment and bandsaw

4. fit timber to the lathe with suitable lathe fittings. Select appropriate speed, set the tool rest height and operate the lathe

5. turn external profile using appropriate turning chisels and turn a spigot to fit into a 4-jaw chuck

6. safely fit to the 4-jaw chuck and turn internal profile using appropriate turning chisels

7. use graded abrasive paper / cloth to sand smooth internal and external profiles

8. apply choice of finish

9. reverse chuck to turn spigot to form a foot

10. sand and apply finish to foot

11. safely remove finished bowl from the woodturning lathe.
