1. gather the necessary equipment for metal detecting, eg detector, trowel, headphones, gloves

2. cover ground effectively with the detector using a slow, low arc moving forwards over the length and breadth of a chosen area

3. cut out a plug, removing turf with a trowel

4. sift through the plug for finds

5. replace the soil and turf after sifting, leaving no trace

6. discussing previously found artefacts with a group.
