INTRODUCTION TO CANOEING (UNIT 1)

Level: Entry Level

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. put on and fit a personal flotation device (PFD)

2. lift and carry a given kayak or canoe in a manner avoiding injury to people or equipment

3. launch and safely board the kayak or canoe, from a given position

4. use a paddle to propel the craft over a given distance, eg 100 metres, using appropriate strokes to assist progress on a reasonably straight course

5. stop the craft on reaching a given destination

6. use a paddle to propel the craft backwards over a given distance, eg 25 metres, using appropriate strokes to assist progress on a reasonably straight course

7. stop the craft on reaching a given destination

8. turn the kayak or canoe through 360

9. move the craft sideways, to the left and to the right, for a given distance, eg five metres

10. perform a capsize drill and retain contact with the kayak or canoe

11. perform at least one further manoeuvre of the kayak or canoe, eg a forwards figure-of-eight course, in order to demonstrate reasonable craft control

12. paddle the kayak or canoe to a given point and disembark.
