Cultural celebrations of the spring equinox

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. identify at least two different cultures that celebrate the spring equinox, eg Nowruz in Iran and central Asia, Pyramid of the Sun celebration in Mexico, Ostara in pagan traditions

2. describe the main traditions, colours and symbols associated with at least two chosen celebrations

3. explain the key themes of the spring equinox across cultures, eg renewal, rebirth, balance

4. describe what 'mindfulness' means to them in the context of seasonal change, eg noticing the smell of fresh grass, hearing birds, feeling warmer sun

5. practice at least one simple mindfulness technique to connect with the feeling of new beginnings inherent in spring, eg focused breathing, body scan, mindful walking

6. design a simple shared ritual to mark the theme of balance, reflecting the equal length of day and night on the equinox, eg a silent moment, collaborative piece of artwork.
