Maths: Meteorological data

Level: Level One

In successfully completing this unit, the learner will haveEvidence needed

demonstrated the ability to

1. calculate and convert between the key units of measurement related to storm data, including knots to miles per hour, pascals to millibars and metres to feet

Student completed work

2. convert raw meteorological data, eg wind speed, barometric pressure, into numerical storm classifications using the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale and the Beaufort Scale

Student completed work

3. create and interpret scatter graphs to model the relationship between two variables, eg wave height, wind speed, and use the model to make at least two predictions about extreme weather events

Student completed work

4. discuss the mathematical outliers in meteorological data and their significance in the context of extreme and mysterious weather events, eg those potentially responsible for the Flannan Isles disappearance.
