Recruiting Invigilators
Recruiting and training invigilators is a key part of your role, so we’ve summarised all the information and guidance you need.
There are several ways of staffing exams for invigilation; some centres recruit casual staff, some use agency staff, and some train their internal staff. Recruiting invigilators is not a one size fits all, so it is useful to have a conversation with your Senior Leadership as far in advance of the series as possible so that you’re all clear on responsibilities and expectations.
Forward planning your centre’s requirements will help to make sure that you’re better prepared for the season. Here are some things you might like to consider when you’re planning invigilation:
- Do you have any Access Arrangements that need additional invigilation?
- Do you have any candidates with exam clashes which need longer sessions?
- Do you have any on screen tests - remember the ratio is 1:20 for these.
- Do you have any alternative site candidates?
If you’re using an agency to supply some of your invigilation team, make sure that you check their credentials and take copies of any invigilation training that they’ve done. We also advise that you familiarise these staff with your centre procedures before their first session. You’ll have to establish the working hours; most agencies will use a full day and half day rate, but you may have some say on the start and end times of these sessions.
Section 2, part 12 of the JCQ ICE document contains information on the regulations you must follow around invigilation.
