A General Paper in the General Certificate of Education Examination
PDF | 4 MB
This paper reports the results of an investigation into the General Paper set in 1953. The review is based on an analysis of grades awarded by the Joint Matriculation Board, and the responses to a questionnaire sent out to all schools that entered candidates. The intention of the study was to capture information about the General Paper, and how it is being used by schools.
The grading analysis considered factors such as gender, type of school, age, nature of subjects studied (arts or sciences) and the relationship between specific subjects and the General Paper.
Further insight was provided by the questionnaire responses from principals and head teachers of participating schools. The questions were designed to elicit information about each institution and about the selection process for pupils chosen to take the General Paper. Respondents also had the opportunity to express their opinions about the paper and comment on its value.
