Making marking visible: New evidence for AI in assessment

Abstract

This research uses eye-tracking and other process data to explore how experienced examiners work towards marking decisions. It shows how examiners navigate and integrate student responses, mark schemes and other marking materials in different ways. The findings provide new evidence about the marking process and how future AI-enabled tools could support examiner judgement while respecting different approaches to marking.
