AS and A-level Biology: updated practical handbook

We have updated the required practical handbook for our AS and A-level Biology (7401, 7402) and the combined version of the handbook to include updates to the section on ‘Statistical tests in Biology’.

The handbook has been updated to provide clarity on the use of statistical tests in relation to practical work. For guidance on what elements may be assessed in a written exam, please refer to the AS and A-level Biology specification.

The updated version of the Practical handbook for Biology (January 2026 version 2.3) and combined (January 2026 version 2.2) is available on our website. Please make sure you are using the latest version. The practical handbooks for A-level Chemistry and A-level Physics are not affected by these updates.
