GCSE Art and Design: specification updates for 2027
Qualification updates for first assessment in 2027

We are pleased to share an important update to our GCSE Art & Design (8201-8206) qualification that will apply from first assessment in summer 2027.
What’s changing
From 2027 onwards, Component 1 will consist of a minimum requirement of one sustained project only and the requirement for further work will be removed. This means that students will no longer need to complete further work in order to meet the minimum assessment requirements and instead can produce one sustained project only, which naturally evidences all four Assessment Objectives. Learners can still choose to produce further work if they wish, and it will still be assessed in the normal way, but from 2027 onwards this will not be a requirement for learners who do not wish to do so.
There’s no change to the Assessment Objectives themselves and no change to the overall weighting of Component 1 within the qualification. AO1, AO2, AO3 and AO4 will each still account for 25% of the marks for the component. Learners will still be expected to demonstrate investigation, development of ideas, refinement of work and a meaningful personal response.
There is no expectation for learners to produce any more work. The breadth and depth of evidence required is the same; it will simply sit within one coherent sustained project rather than being divided between a sustained project and further work.
Why we’ve made the change
We know how much careful planning goes into structuring the portfolio, and that dividing time between different requirements can limit flexibility and reduce the time available. The update we’ve made is designed to give that time back to you and your learners. It allows you to build a purposeful and ambitious creative journey where investigation, experimentation, refinement and final outcomes sit alongside one another in a connected way. It reduces unnecessary administrative complexity while keeping rigour, clarity and fairness in marking.
What’s staying the same
Importantly, standards will be maintained. The changes will strengthen coherence, support sustainable workload and place the emphasis firmly where it belongs, on high quality teaching, meaningful marking and confident creative development.
The following will not change:
- the assessment criteria balance of marks
- the expectation of breadth and depth - the moderation processes will stay in place to ensure consistency and confidence.
Support and resources
We have updated the specification (version 1.2, 1 February 2026) on our website and will give clear exemplifications at our Teacher Standardisation events and on Centre Services (secure area of our website) before our first assessment in 2027. Our aim is to make this transition straightforward and well supported.
We are grateful for the professionalism and expertise that our teaching colleagues bring to delivering GCSE Art and Design and we remain committed to working in partnership with you to ensure the qualification continues to be rigorous, inspiring and manageable in equal measure.
